Logging Days
Logging Days 2000 came in the midst of the warmest February many could remember. No snow, a little sleet, and a bit of mud. All that didn't make a lot of difference to those who attended. A good time was had by all. But it did mean the date would be shifted to an earlier time. The date since then has been the first Saturday in February.
There is a program in the Lumberjack Hall of Fame with music, talks, and the installation of new inductees.
The three senior members sat together: Agnes Dickinson on the left is the wife of Leonard Dickinson, who established the Hall of Fame.
In addition to a band, there are exhibitions and expert demonstrations. These are always an interesting part of Logging Days.
Monte Draper always conducts a class in woodcarving for students.
The Hemmerick brothers (Leonard and Earl) showed how to load logs on a sleigh with a horse-drawn side loader.
A different demonstration: Crosshaul loading, a side jammer loading logs on a sleigh.
The old and the new came together with Adrian DeVries' horse-drawn hydraulic side loader.
Earle Dickinson and Bill Fritz showed the easiest way to use the cross cut saw. (Keep the teeth six inches above the log.) Behind them the chainsaw sculptor was carving a bear.
Everyone enjoyed as many pancakes as they could eat. This was only one of the tables.
Logging days is held the first Saturday in February.
