Donald D. Brand Predissertation Fellowship

Funds from the Erich W. Zimmermann Professorship in Geography are available on a competitive basis for graduate students in geography at the University of Texas.  The fellowship is named in honor of Professor  Donald D. Brand, distinguished Southwestern and Latin American geographer, archaeologist, and historian, and founder of UT’s Department of Geography and the Environment.

One or more grants of up to $1500 will be made each year.  All topics will be considered.  Preference, however, will be given to those applicants who’s interests parallel those of Professor Brand, and/or deal with resources, the specialty of Professor Zimmermann, an economic geographer for whom the professorship is named.

The fellowship is for predissertation field work.  It is anticipated that successful applicants will use use the fellowship as “seed money” to gather preliminary data necessary for the writing of longer proposals in order to obtain substantial external research grants for their dissertation research.

Applicants must submit a typed proposal no more than two pages in length outlining:
        (1) their immediate and long-term research plans,
        (2) a budget of anticipated expenses,
        (3) a schedule of their course of study, including the anticipated dates of advancement to candidacy examinations, and
                all field work,
        (4) a list of sources from which it is anticipated that additional external funding will be sought, and
        (5) the name(s) of the supervising professor(s) and other faculty who may be on the student’s committee.

A letter from the supervising professor(s) indicating his, her, or their agreement to serve as dissertation advisor(s) should be submitted separately.

The deadline for application is 1 November.

Proposals should be submitted, and supervising letters sent, to:  William E. Doolittle, GRG 306.
