Some find it to be too conventional and unreflective of the current pop culture and others find it to be too challenging. This class is the answer to conventional ballet! Using a combination of classical and popular music, we will focus on strong technique while exploring the boundaries of the conventional style by adding a pinch of jazz and a dash of Hip Hop. Ballet is the answer to both lengthening and strengthening your muscles, and is essential in any aspiring dancer's repertoire. At least one year of ballet or dance experience recommended. The priorities and assessment of a survival problem will be discussed along with field scenarios. The recognition and prevention of hypothermia will be a primary focus of instruction. Assembly and use of a survival kit will be introduced with demonstrations of the components. The importance of knowing why priorities must be dealt with in order is critical to successfully handling an unexpected overnight stay in the woods. Statistics show that the great majority of lost persons are found within the first 72 hours. This 8-hour class offers a wide variety of methods, techniques, and skills needed to educate you about how to help yourself. You will actually learn to build fires in a variety of seasonal weather conditions including rain and snow. Learn to use a variety of techniques to build, start, and maintain a campfire. Flint and steel methods of ignition will be used. Survival shelter construction, emergency signaling, and fire building are the main topics of this hands-on experiential based program. Plan to spend $5 for printed materials and about $5 for a park pass. John Weishaar is an outdoorsman with years of "real life" wilderness living experience. Living in the Alaskan wilderness, he developed and used skills that were a necessity of survival. He has served as a backcountry patrol deputy, forest firefighter, and training officer for mountain search and rescue organizations. It's a road rally on foot. It's a treasure hunt in the woods. During class, you will learn about the sport of orienteering and how to read a map and compass. At the field trip, you'll discover how to find your way from one colored marker to another using a map and compass. The topographical map shows trails, roads, open areas, fences, buildings, and more. The sport of orienteering challenges both the mind and body. The key is more the ability to make wise decisions rather than the ability to run like a deer. Bring $5 to first class for map and handouts. Plan to spend $12 on a protractor compass and $2 for park entrance fee. Transportation will be by carpool. Steve Nelson has taught orienteering for 23 years. (2 meetings and 1 field trip) 5997|2600.601|Hiking In Central Texas| |2003 Spring II|Outdoors|6|20|6|3/26/2003|3/29/2003|7:00:00 PM|9:00:00 PM|1
