Although free communication is encouraged at The Phalanx, a few posting
guidelines should be followed for the sake of other members.
1. Stay on topic.
Unless what you want to say is truly relevant, make sure you only
discuss events relevant to the group focus, that is, ancient
Greek history. Avoid discussing modern politics or issues that could
potentially start an argument. We are a diverse group of people,
and given that, the best way to be productive is to avoid discussing
potentially incendiary subject matter.
In addition to avoiding conflict, this rule should be followed
as a matter of courtesy, since many people have joined the discussion
group with the sole intent of learning about ancient Greece, not
about modern political squabbles and such. It can be irritating
to have one's mailbox fill up with the contents of irrelevant (and
usually pointless) arguments.
2. Don't forward chain letters or spam.
As with #1, this guideline is for the benefit of your fellow members.
Unless the mail is especially relevant to the group, refrain from
forwarding chain letters or advertisements to the group. This is
just as bad as sending unsolicited email to strangers--in fact,
that's exactly what happens.
3. No question is too dumb. Ask anything you want.
Feel free to ask anything of the group, even if the question seems
ridiculously basic to you. Many people will thank you if you do,
since there are often overlooked pieces of information that come
to light when a knowledgable member provides elaboration.
4. Above all, have fun! I'm out of ideas.
