HPS Requirements for Philosophy Students

To be recognized as graduates of this program students must (1) complete at least three graduate courses in philosophy of science, one of which must be an introductory course in philosophy of science; (2) complete two upper-division or graduate courses in the history of the formal, natural, or social sciences; (3) complete two upper-division or graduate courses in the formal, natural, or social sciences; and (4) write a dissertation in the philosophy of science under the supervision of a member of the HPS program.

If the language requirement for the Philosophy Ph. D. has not already been satisfied using a language that is judged by the student's committee to be germane to the area of specialization, the student must also demonstrate reading competence in a language that is deemed appropriate by the committee. The satisfaction of requirement (3) must be similarly vetted by that committee.

Students satisfying only requirements (1) -(3) will receive certification of having completed the course requirements of the program without being a graduate of the program. For such students, the langauge requirement and requirement (3) must be satisfied by courses or examinations which have the approval of the HPS Director. Under special circumstances, with the approval of the HPS Director, a qualifying examination may be substituted for either requirement (2) or (3). Under these circumstances the HPS Director will set up a committee of three faculty members to design and administer the examination.
