Guidelines for melody (individual voices)
##1-5 come from Fux, Gradus ad Parnassum. The others are Gauldin's.
1. no augmented, diminished, or chromatic intervals.
2, no intervals larger than P5. Exceptions: P8, ascending m6
3. stay in vocal register
4. avoid more than one 1 skip in same direction (exceptions: see 9 below)
5. avoid uncorrected skips larger than a third
6. ascending leaps to B-natural are rare --page 17
7. generally stepwise motion --17
8. leap at top or bottom of line, not the middle --18
9. exceptions to #4: see Ex. 2-3 on p. 18
10. avoid repeated notes, three or more Ex. 2-4
11. avoid sequences, three or more Ex. 2-4
12. avoid outlining the augmented 4th; the d5 is okay Ex. 2-5
13. isolate highest and lowest pitches (don't repeat too often; shape lines to emphasize them) --19
