FAQ
Is lockpicking / the possession or purchase of lockpicks illegal?
There's no simple answer to this. Every state has different laws pertaining to lockpicking and the possession of lockpicking tools. It is your responsibility to familiarize yourself with the applicable laws, such as Texas Penal Code Sec. 16.01. While the Longhorn Lockpicking Club offers no legal advice, it is our general understanding that possession of lockpicking tools for the purpose of picking locks that you own does not fit the criteria to be unlawful under this section of Texas law.
I've locked myself out of my car / apartment, can you help me?
No. We are not a locksmith service, we are a hobbyist organization of people who enjoy the sport of picking locks. We encourage you to attend our meetings to see what hobbyist lockpicking is all about.
Do I have to be a UT student to join?
As a student organization our membership is restricted to University of Texas students, staff and faculty.
Do I have to sign anything to become a member?
Yes. In keeping with our purpose of providing a safe atmosphere for honest hobbyist lockpickers we require you to fill out a membership form and provide a UT ID card before becoming a member.
What does it cost to join?
Club dues are $20 and cover one semester.
Do I need my own lockpick set?
It is highly recommended that you purchase your own lockpick set so you can practice at and between meetings. There may or may not be spare sets to lend out during meetings, but as a member you will be able to purchase a basic lockpicking set from the club. There are also a few online vendors of lockpicking tools listed at the bottom of the Links page.
