Champagne Majic

Magic, born Jan. 16, 2002, (a gelding) was two years old when we bought him in 2004. He is only 36” tall at the withers (shoulders), so he is considered a mini llama. His parents were full sized. Majic is champagne colored, with very heavy, high quality wool. He carries himself with confidence and poise as if he weighs 400 lbs like his father.

Majic may be small, but he has poise and attitude that is a llama owner's dream. He is always happy and in a good mood. His walking gait resembles that of a prancing horse in show ring. His manners are impeccable. He comes into the house and knows that treats are in the refrigerator. He is very careful not to bump or disturb anything, and leaves when instructed. If he is not noticed waiting at the door, he will rattle the doorknob.

Since Majic is the smallest llama, and the newest addition to our herd, he was at the bottom of the pecking order. This changed with the birth of Inti. The day Inti was born, Majic nominated himself has her personal protector. From that day, he would kush at night against the fence where Inti and Kimi were isolated. I had to go out and halter him during rainstorms and lead him to shelter since he would not voluntarily leave his charges. When Kimmie and Inti rejoined the llama herd, Majic was their constant companion. Kimmie took this for granted and would leave Inti in Majic's care while she foraged. Inti spent as many hours per day in Majic's care as she did with her mom. Majic, Kimmie, and Inti became a permanent trio. Majic immediately rose in rank, because he has a powerful ally in Kimmie. Inti sleeps with her mom at night, but Majic is always nearby. Inti is now larger than Majic, and no longer subordinate to him at the food bowl. It may be llama politics, but the emotional dependence between the members of the trio is real, and I think good for all three.

Majic likes to hike and ride in the van. At the gate he stands rock still to be haltered. He eagerly jumps into the van to go places, and like Glacier, he wants to kush under the rearview mirror beside the driver. That can stimulate a spit display if both Glacier and Magic are aboard the van.

The most amazing thing about Magic is his happy personality. His ears are always up, his eyes bright and expressive, and his manner courteous and gentle. He is a joyful and trustful companion.

Majic (foreground) was born January 2002. At 2 years he is only 36" at the withers, putting him in the mini llama category. Compare his height to the two adult females behind him, Siesta (left) and Apu (right .

He rode home in our Dodge 15 passenger van from which the seats had been removed.
