Kimberlite (Kimmie)

Kimmie (QV Kimberlite) was born 4 September 1999. She was a very sophisticated four-year-old female when we bought her in June 2003. Kimmie is well trained and very well behaved. She usually does not volunteer whiffles, but will respond to a request for a greeting with grace and good manners. When hiking, she positions herself at the correct spot (to the right and slightly behind the human) and she obeys commands without hesitation.

Kimmie is not usually aggressive to other llamas, but if food is available she figures she has as much right to it as anyone else. She is not aggressive, just assertive. Llama feeding time goes smoothly - if you feed Kimmie first!

It was good that she is an experienced mom with exceptionally good judgment, because we did not know what to expect. She gave birth to a daughter, Inti (Intiwatana), December 2, 2004. She isolated herself in the north barnyard for the birth, and did everything right. For the first couple of weeks, Kimmie declared her barnyard off limits to everything except humans and llamas - no dogs, no cats.

Inti is a slightly larger version of Kimmie. Their bond is close. Inti nursed until she was a year old. Kimmie is a gentle mother who weaned her daughter gently and gradually. Kimmie and Inti sleep together - often close enough to be in contact. They exchange affectionate contact and muzzling that is not seen between any of the other llamas. Kimmie is an assertive mom becomes very interested if another llama gives her daughter any trouble.
