To begin, labor holiday is not a "holiday
from labor" but instead a period of time (usually a weekend) when house
members work together in groups to accomplish large projects that
cannot be completed by members within the normal labor schedule. This
picture shows a former labor czarina presiding overone of the projects
completed during a labor holiday: rebuilding of the fence
surrounding the front lawn of 1905. Other projects in the past have
included repainting the commons, building additional shelves for rooms
and bathrooms, and improving the landscaping in the courtyard,
building the sun deck, etc.
However, there is a "holiday" component to labor holiday. The house usually provides beverages and snacks for consumption during the day while people are working and, in addition, sponsors a pizza and/or ice cream party in the evening.
