    Membership

  • Small size (45 members) makes for a close-knit community
  • Mostly older students, graduate students (under 21 must have house approval)
  • Quiet, studious atmosphere
  • Democratically controlled by house members

    Rent

  • Single: Per month average $592 (9 month Fall & Spring 2005-6 contract)
    For Summer 2005 - $540 per 6 week session
  • Double: Per month average $459 (9 month Fall & Spring 2005-6 contract)
    For Summer 2005 - $460 per 6 week session
  • Discounts for semester (3%) or yearly payments (5%)
  • Includes seventeen (17) meals per week and utilities (excluding personal telephone)

    Labor

  • Five (5) hours per week; most jobs entail cooking or cleaning
  • Other jobs include maintenance, grounds work, running errands, etc.

    Meals

  • Seventeen (17) meals per week (vegetarian option at many meals)
  • Homemade meals prepared by Laurel House members
  • Breakfast, lunch, dinner on weekdays, brunch on weekends
  • 24-hour snacks including leftovers, cereal, peanut butter & jelly, chips, bread, coffee, etc.

    Physical Features

  • Central heat and air conditioning
  • Full kitchen (open 24 hours) with walk-in refrigerator, 2 large freezers
  • Commons/Dining area
  • TV Room (including cable, VCR, DVD player)/Living Room
  • Study Room
  • Computer Room
  • House telephone
  • Laundry Room (50 cents per load for both washing and drying)
  • Front lawn, Courtyard, and Sun deck
  • Parking for new members available on lottery basis

    Rooms

  • Mostly single rooms but three doubles are available
  • Approx. 13 ft. x 13 ft. (4 m x 4 m)
  • Furnished including bed, dresser, desk, shelves, closet
  • Most rooms in 1905 share bathrooms in suites, slightly larger rooms
  • Most rooms in 1907 have private bathrooms, slightly smaller rooms
  • No smoking allowed inside any private room or public space
  • Pets must be approved by the house prior to arrival and an extra security deposit is required

    Computers

    Free accounts and access to the computer room. While it is constantly changing, the general layout is:

  • Broadband internet connection in every room
  • Four PCs running Windows with DVDs and 17" LCD monitors. Firewire, ZIP 100, CD and DVD burners available
  • Macintosh G4 Power PC 4x8 DVD-ROM, 100 MB Zip drive, external USB floppy drive, 17" LCD monitor Mac OS X
  • Fedora linux on a dedicated machine with a 19" CRT monitor
  • HP LaserJet 4200 laser printer
  • UMAX 1220U Flatbed color Scanner (1200dpi, 36 bit color)
  • All machines connected by 100BaseT Ethernet Local Area Network (LAN)

    Special

  • Newspaper subscriptions (New York Times, Austin American-Statesman)
  • Cookie Night on Thursday evenings
  • Monthly educational programs on a wide variety of interesting topics
  • Annual Birthday Party in October with special dinner and desserts
  • Various other social events throughout the year (parties, movie nights, etc.)
  • Facilities available for use at other houses (pool room, pool, piano, etc.)
  • Low cost summer storage space for continuing members usually available

    Becoming a member

  • Fill out a College Houses application (available at LH in person or by correspondence) and turn it in at Laurel House or the College Houses main office (1906 Pearl St. Austin, TX 78705, 512-476-5678)
  • On-line applications are currently available

  • Applicants currently living in Austin will be requested to come to a membership meeting, if possible
