At Valutino, Napoleon concentrated 120,000 troops for a trap. Marshal Ney's corps with 30,000 attacked General Barclay de Tolly's army of 40,000. The Russians had a strong position in marshy ground behind a stream. Errors by Marshals Junot and Murat allowed the Russians to escape.
