Davout blocked Bagration's effort to join the larger Russian force by defeating him south of Mogilev (Mohilev). In that engagement, the 24,000 to 28,000 French troops engaged 48,000 to 60,000 Russians in the 2nd Army under Bagration. Bagration attacked Davout northward, whose army held a strong position on the Dneiper river south of the village.
French: 1,000; Russians: 4,000.
Bagration was able to retreat. His army crossed the Dnieper and joined Barclay near Smolensk on 3 August.
