I also wanted to involve high school students and to give them the opportunity to learn not only about the night the Berlin Wall fell but also about the events leading up to the fall of the Berlin Wall as well as the life in the GDR prior to the fall, etc. The workshop was a great success and almost 100 students and a many their teachers came and participated in this workshop.
In addition to the main event on November 9th, 2009 we had a film series showing movies centered around Berlin and the Wall in the Fall Semester of 2009.
To celebrate and to commemorate the events of November 9th we "recreated" the Berlin Wall and held a candlelight commemoration with a minute of silence on November 9th, 2009. Students from the University of Texas, Austin and from schools in the area as well as the public decorated cardboard boxes with a message of their choice about something that needs to be changed in the world. After "building" the cardboard wall with the graffitty side facing west the Wall was torn down in a peaceful "revolution" from the east.
Once a year (in the Spring semester) the German Club and the Germanic Studies Department offers students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the German language for a weekend. Students come from all over Texas to participate in a weekend full of fun German learning opportunities.
