SOURCE: This true and moving story of the origin of the Austin Area Garden Center was related to the author by Isamu Taniguchi, the designer and builder of Austin's Oriental Garden. He patiently told Jane of his work in the garden each day,and of Mother Tree's generous contribution-the giving of her life for the garden.

NEED: More than 100,000 visitors tour the Oriental Garden each year, but at present there is no marker on Mother Tree -- only the pagoda Mr.Taniguchi built to honor her after her death. This book serves as a guide for visitors as they walk through this peaceful garden. It is needed to help young children experience the bond with nature at its highest level. The Story of the Mother Tree will show a peaceful way to live in a society torn apart by stress and violence.(As a result of Jane's efforts, an appropriate marker has now been erected beside the mother tree!)

RECOGNITION: The author was honored to read this story to Mr. Taniguchi at the Harvest Moon Festival in the Bamboo Teahouse the autumn before his death. She was asked to read it again to the children of Austin at Mr. Tanigushi's Memorial Service in the Oriental Garden.A quote from Alan Taniguchi, Isamu Taniguchi's son: "Jane, your story tells so much in such a few words, it is like Haiku. The book is like a little jewel."
