SOURCE: Hector's Excapades were
inspired after watching the Austin bats emerge from Congress Avenue bridge by
the millions! The sensory experiences from those viewings are powerful, as is
evidenced by thousands of tourists who gather each evening to watch them. knowing
that young children relate to one animal better than to many, the author chose
one baby bat as the protagonist in these simple stories, told in a series.
NEED: There is much fear and anxiety about the bats.
People scream in terror, and try to kill every bat they see! Young children firmly
believe all bats are vampires that want to drink their blood! Dur ing the author's
teaching career, she felt the need for a children's book to show the other side
of the bats-the good side. That is what Hector does. He helps children and adults
alike accept the bats and realize that they actually help, but that they are wild
animals and need to be left alone!
BOOK: The book is written with enriched language, enhanced with
rhythmic cues children need for understanding, and with beautiful black and white
illustrations to provide the child with factual awareness of the bat's anatomy,
his habitat, and his migratory intuitions. The book will fill the gap for childrens'
needs, and is an excellent extended resource for elementary school classrooms.
With each new series of Hector, the author will introduce one or two more concepts
about the bats, giving the children interesting information, but not more than
they can remember and relate to at one time.
