Thank you for your interest in the facilitator training course, Processes of Intergroup Dialogue Facilitation, offered by the Office of the Dean of Students and Educational Psychology. This course is designed to provide foundational skills and knowledge needed to facilitate multicultural group interactions, particularly intergroup dialogues. Topics include basic group facilitation skills; social identity and group development; prejudice and stereotyping; privilege and oppression; intergroup communication; conflict intervention; and community building techniques. Students who successfully complete this training may apply to serve as peer facilitators for the course, Intergroup Dialogues: EDP 210.
The facilitator position requires an individual who exhibits responsibility, commitment to the pursuit of social justice, and the desire to teach, learn, and grow with others. You will have the opportunity to expand your own self-awareness, and potentially influence the identity development and multicultural understanding of other students. Through the training course and facilitator position, you will develop valuable life skills in communication, group dynamics, teamwork, facilitation, and other valuable areas. If you are looking for ways to make a difference at the University of Texas at Austin, then this may be the very opportunity for you.
It will be helpful to think through the following questions to see if this position is right for you:
- What do I understand about my own identity development? How willing am I to engage in a process of self-reflection and share this process with others?
- How comfortable am I with conflict in general? With cross cultural conflict? How willing am I to identify conflict areas with others and work toward common understanding?
- What other activities do I want to get involved within the next year? Will they conflict with the training course or facilitation responsibilities?
- What are my perceptions of people within my identity group? What are my perceptions of people with social identities different than mine? Am I ready to discuss and work on these perceptions where needed?
