Intergroup Dialogue, a class taught by students for students, is a 2 credit hour course that explores social group identity, conflict, community and social justice. Dialogues are composed of a balanced number of student participants, usually 6 to 8 from each identity group. Trained student facilitators - one from each identity group - encourage dialogue rather than debate.
Each Intergroup Dialogue explores identities defined by gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic class and ability, with a specific focus on one particular identity. Students have the opportunity to examine and discuss reading materials that address issues and experiences relevant to the groups in the Dialogues. Participants and facilitators explore similarities and differences among and across groups, and strive toward a deeper understanding of individual and group identity.
Past dialogues have included People of Color and White People; Lesbians, Gay Men, Bisexuals, Transgender People and Heterosexuals; Women and Men; and Black Women and Black Men.
