Intern Perspective

HCMP is a student-founded, student-led program that past and present interns and coordinators hope will continue to be a presence in the coming years. In order to find out whether this program is a worthwhile effort, HCMP asked some of the past and present interns what they have learned about medicine through the program as well as how their view of medicine has changed.

"As for myself, I was already interested in medicine before I entered this program.  I knew that I wanted to go into medicine following my volunteer experiences I had at Brackenridge, and I was already applying to medical school before I started as an intern.  As a result, the program has mainly been an opportunity for me to gain an in-depth perspective of what I am about to face in the future.  The rotation at the Texas Department of Health has given me a different perspective of a career in the healthcare industry. With the TDH experience, you gain a much broader view of what healthcare encompasses.  The focus is more community-oriented considering you are dealing with the public health for an entire state’s population."

Steven Rodrigues, Fall 2000 Intern, Texas Department of Health

"HCMP has allowed me to strengthen my knowledge about the role of a physician.  For example, through my adult rotation, I have learned that family practitioners see a large diversity of patients.  I also enjoyed my experience attending grand rounds with the physicians.  Many different departments came together to discuss current treatments for their patients. This was educational, because I learned that physicians consider all aspects affecting their patients’ recovery, including their families."

Jennifer Schopp, Fall 2000 intern, adult rotation at Brackenridge Hospital*

“My experience in the pediatric rotation was an extremely positive one.  I went on rounds with a pediatric team at the Children’s Hospital of Austin once a week.  This was a great experience because it changed my perception of the relationships between individuals on the team.  The attending physicians were very encouraging and helpful.  They created a positive environment in which the residents and interns could flourish.”

Preeya Raghu, Fall 2000 Intern, pediatric rotation at Children's Hospital of Austin*

"After spending the past 12 weeks as an HCMP intern, I can tell you that although I don’t know all there is to know about the medical field, maybe not even half, I can tell you that this program, and the extraordinary physicians that participate in it, have really solidified my desire to practice medicine, and even pointed me in certain directions within the field. Medicine is something I can picture myself doing. I’ll share one of many stories with you to serve as an example. If you had said 12 weeks ago, Tommy, what would you think about doing family practice? I would have probably chuckled and said something like, “I don’t think so, it’s not for me. I wouldn’t want to do that.” But, let me tell you, after finishing an amazing rotation with Dr. Sprute at the Blackstock Family Health Clinic, I can very much picture myself working in family practice. Whether I had slept 10 hours or 2 hours the night before I, I always looked forward to my Tuesday mornings every week. Although things will undoubtedly change a few times, maybe many times, over the next several years, to have these experiences as an undergrad is truly incredible and something that is unique to the members of the HCMP program. This program has been the vehicle for me to discover all the behind the scenes work that a doctor encounters with insurance companies, lawyers and liability, paperwork, etc., in addition to the obvious that everyone always sees on TV or experiences themselves as a patient."
Tommy Vanelli, Spring 2003 Intern, adult rotation at Brackenridge Hospital*
