HCMP
1998
David
and Gunjan recruited the
help of other interested students: Moshmee Kalmaker, Christina
Robinson, and Mahnaz Rematullah. These five students became
the coordinators of the program.
Working with physicians and
hospital administrators at Children’s Hospital of Austin, they
established a curriculum in which two interns would be able to
shadow doctors during daily activities in a hospital setting for a
semester. The following semester, the interns become the
coordinators. Thereby, HCMP became a student-based and
student-run organization Scott Pollack and Jeff Zhao
were the first group of interns in the spring of 1998.
They
found new program supporters in Tom McVey, former Texas
Department of Health Volunteer Coordinator, and Dr. Lysbeth
Miller, former Central
Texas Medical Foundation Director and currently Internal
Medicine Director of Austin
Medical Education Programs.
Volunteer
Services Department would not increase number of interns beyond
two students. With the desire to open the program for more
students to have an opportunity to participate in HCMP, the five
coordinators began looking for a foundation of program. They
sought assistance from Central Texas Medical Foundation, Health
Professions Office, Travis
County Medical Society, and Texas
Department of Health
