Vireos & Warblers, 1975-1988

Dead Man's Basin, Hays Co., Texas

The common vireos in the first years of the period were Bell's Vireo and Yellow-throated Vireo. Both nested at Purola, but Bell's has only appeared on rare occasion since fall 1985; Yellow-throated was last a spring regular in 1982, but has not stayed the full breeding season since 1981. [It still breeds in the area - and was last seen this summer on August 18.] In recent years White-eyed Vireo has maintained a conspicuous presence, and appears to have avoided Cowbird predation. Black-capped Vireo has never been recorded in this area (nor in adjacent areas, to my knowledge).

The Golden-cheeked Warbler breeds along Dead Man's Canyon, and only once has been recorded regularly during breeding season outside that area - in the bottomland some half mile upstream from Dead Man's Hole. It's occurrence above Dead Man's Canyon has been limited to migration, especially after breeding in early summer. Myrtle and Orange-crowned Warblers were regular winter residents, but have been much less common in recent years, especially Myrtle Warbler. Black&White Warbler used to appear regularly in migration as well as early July, an indication of breeding in the area - but no longer. [Regular migratory warblers are shown in red on the table.]
