ITL375 (32750): Contemporary Italian Fiction

Conducted in Italian, this course will focus on Italian fiction written within the past three decades. We will discuss works by Italo Calvino, Clara Sereni, Umberto Eco, Antonio Tabucchi, and Dacia Maraini through the lens of such cultural markers as postmodernism, historical consciousness, contemporary literary theory, and the socio-political challenges facing Italy today.

Discussion Prompts: Twice during the semester, once before and once after spring break, you are required to provide a starting point for class discussion by identifying 1-2 passages from the reading that you find particularly noteworthy. The day before class (9 p.m. at the latest), you must send an e-mail message (to my address above) with your comments on the passage(s) and a relevant question or two for class discussion.
No final examination.
