My research addresses impacts of technology on society,
particularly the role of technology in shaping innovations in communication.
Language and other semiotic systems play a key role in building and maintaining
culture, including social hierarchies, art, habits of interpretation, and
specialized language practices. I have conducted fieldwork in Pohnpei, Micronesia,
Germany, Romania, and in the Austin Deaf community.
