My research addresses impacts of technology on society, particularly the
role of technology in shaping communication. I am interested in the role
of language and other semiotic systems in building and maintaining social
hierarchies, in mulit-modal communication (communication using not only
language, but the body), in specialized language practices. I have conducted
fieldwork in Pohnpei, Micronesia, and in the Deaf community.
