Conversation Analysis and Narrative

This course introduces students to two ways to look at relationships between language and culture. We look at and learn how to do conversation analysis (CA) and we look at ways to analyze narrative. Course material includes literature on conversation analysis, including the concepts of repair, turn-taking, assessment, negotiation of meaning, context, identity and other social membership category work. It also includes readings on narrative analysis. Questions of the utility of research methodologies with respect to research questions and research design are discussed throughout the semester.
