Claus has published academically in various periodicals in the United States, the Netherlands, and Denmark within the field of Scandinavian studies on a wide range of topics, spanning from irony and Kierkegaard to contemporary poetry. His research interests include literature, writing, critical thinking, nationalism, identity, storytelling, poetry, Kierkegaard, and romantic literature.
Claus also contributes to Danish newspapers on a regular basis with Op–Eds on cultural and political issues. He is a staff–writer for Graf – a magazine dedicated to new literature – and was the editor–in–chief of Det ny Reception (now published as Reception. Tidskrift for nordisk litteratur) from 1992–1999.
For the past eight years Claus has taught literature, culture, and language courses as a lecturer at two of the largest universities in the US: From 2000–2004 at the University of Minnesota and from 2005–2008 at the University of Texas at Austin. He has received several teaching awards, including the College of Liberal Arts' Student Choice Award at the Univeristy of Minnesota in 2004. Most recently, he was nominated for The Chancellor's Teaching Award at UT Austin.
As a native Dane, Claus attended the University of Copenhagen. He received his B.A. in 1995 and his cand.mag. in 1999, both in Danish with minors in History and Film.
From August 2008, he will be teaching at UCLA.
