Demos, IPA sites

  • Ladefoged's Vowels and Consonants web page, from A Course in Phonetics (UCLA). This site is a must - many useful resources and demos including IPA charts with sound files for each phonetic symbol. *** Plan on spending some time exploring this site. (Peter Ladefoged, UCLA)***
  • The companion web page for A Course in Phonetics (Ladefoged). Here you will find sound files etc. for each chapter of the book.
  • Video of the vocal folds vibrating.
  • Interactive IPA Charts by Paul Meier and Eric Armstrong. The advantage of this site is that when you click on a sound to hear it, it doesn't take you away from the chart (so you aren't constantly hitting the 'back' button).
  • Duck calls, MRIs of articulatory configurations for common vowels.
  • Interactive sagittal section You can vary settings this demo to assume the articulatory configuration for consonants; also gives the IPA symbol for the consonants modelled.
  • The Wikipedia page for the IPA.
  • The speech accent archive Among other useful resources, this site contains a collection of voices reading the same passage - with accents frm all over the world. Phonetic transcriptions (sometimes a bit rough) are provided for many of the files.
  • Links on Scott Myers' web page.

    Transcription exercises

  • Flemish
  • Bulgarian
