Natacha Poggio In my inquiry into the design of human experience, I look beyond applied products and broaden my view to include all sorts of objects and environments with which people interact. In the beginning of my graduate studies, my goal was to provide design solutions for a population with different abilities (such as the visually impaired). As my work evolved, I have realized that individuals without disabilities can also augment their experiences by utilizing other senses, beyond sight. My design process combines universal design principles with the perceptive possibilities of the physical senses to provoke an impact on the audience, in their approaching, thinking, and reacting to my work. Before the Fall is a sound journey designed to be performed at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum. A variety of field recordings, including natural ambiences and intentional soundmaking, are combined in the creation of an aural portrait of the Icarus sculpture. My hope is to bring an awareness that leads to discoveries that we wouldn't ordinarily make, and that we also extend our senses, in a way that allows us to appreciate the sculpture in a different way. |
