My view of Pop Art is one of sleek design and social confrontation. A
recent fascination with the genre has led me to pair my love of portraiture
with Pop's bold commercial appeal within eight paintings. The series is a commentary on historical women, and is a reflection of my
personal knowledge regarding prominent females. Due to the fact that my
understanding of these figures is limited, I was given the opportunity to
represent them earnestly and/or satirically. I chose to glamorize the women
to push a sense of glossy beauty magazine appeal, while I gave them actions
and attributes to align with my constructs of them. Each painting is a
result of a repeated layering process involving acrylic latex, spray paint,
and oil paint. The eight paintings form a basic grid of four by eight feet,
but communicate with each other in a more complex conversation.
