GRID

January 28 - February 10, 2006
Opening Saturday, January 28, Creative Research Laboratory presents GRID,
an open call exhibition embracing the standard dimension 4' by 8',
featuring work by students, faculty, and staff at the University of Texas at Austin
at large. The opening reception will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at Creative
Research Laboratory, located at 2832 East Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard in Austin.
The environment we live in is constructed on a standardized grid determined
by the available building materials. In GRID the gallery floor and walls
are divided into squares, and the artist's work fits within the individual cells.
The size of work in the show fits within the volume 4' x 8' x 4' in any orientation.
The proportion of the cells is related to the Greco-Roman architectural ideal
of the double cube. This cell dimension fits into the bed of a standard-size pick-up truck.
The exhibition is curated from an open call to the University community at
large. It is the first exhibition at the CRL to bring together not only
artists from various departments at UT, but also across departments:
undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff. The exhibition
features work in a variety of media produced in response to the restrictions
of a standardized dimension. The artists featured in Grid, be they individual
or in collaboration, are: Robert Dale Anderson, Jarrod Beck, Melanie Bush,
Elana Farley, Ali Fitzgerald, Kelly Green, Mark Hensel, Melissa Hinojosa,
Carla Hyman, Tamara Johnson, Aron Johnston, Marianne McGrath,
Jessica Moroney, Jill Pangallo, Cari Palazzolo, Christa Palazzolo,
Matt Smith, Jason Sowell, Stephanie Wagner, Giacomo Yaquinto,
Virginia Yount and Billy Zinser.
The exhibition was curated by the CRL Director Hana Hillerova. The idea for
the exhibition was inspired by a conversation with the artist and curator
Barna Kantor. The curatorial concept was developed in collaboration with the
CRL Committee.
Creative Research Laboratory presents a year-round schedule of exhibitions of work by students and faculty at the University
of Texas at Austin, and also facilitates workshops, performances, demonstrations, seminars and collaborations.
Creative Research Laboratory is located in East Austin at 2832 East Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, inside Flatbed World
Headquarters. There is ample free parking and bus service available on Capitol Metro's route 18. The activities of the Department
of Art and Art History and the Creative Research Laboratory are free and open to the public.
