Opening Saturday, August 13, Creative Research Laboratory presents Shade, introducing work by 12 Master of Fine Arts candidates curated by four Art History graduate students, all from the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Austin. The opening reception will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at Creative Research Laboratory, located at 2832 East Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard in Austin.

Shade is the second of two summer exhibitions organized collaboratively by students in the Department of Art and Art History. The artists featured in Shade include Michelle Bayer, Jarrod Beck, Roberto Bellini, Katalin Hausel, Marianne McGrath, Meme McNairy, Mike Osborne, Natacha Poggio, Scott Proctor, Adam Schreiber, Nathan Spondike, and Thuy- Van Vu. Curated by Alex Codlin, Laura A. Lindenberger, Breanne Robertson, and Edwin Stirman.

Shade is the second show from this collaboration and includes artists working in a primarily abstract mode, whose works explore visual structure, material, and color. The first show, Fever, featured artists whose whimsical narratives stimulated the viewer’s sensory perceptions. These two shows are in dialogue with each other, both conceptually as well as visually, and capture an incredibly fertile and creative moment within the Department of Art and Art History.

The artists in Shade approach their work from a formal vantage point that is visually cool, but forces the viewer to be actively and intellectually engaged when looking. Issues of process and materials form a basis that many of the artists explore in order to understand the physical product of their labor. Daily activities and rituals become a source of investigation and encourage the viewer to examine both the repetition and the variation in their own everyday practice. Vacant and unpredictable spaces force introspection and inquiry from the viewer while quietly telling their own stories. Other artists analyze the contradictions between balance and tension, unique and replicated objects.

Further, Shade challenges the importance of visual perception in our interpretation of individual works of art. One participant translates different works in Shade into a variety of media that stimulates the senses. Volunteer-guided tours of Shade for visitors with disabilities will be available on Saturday, August 27 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. Creative Research Laboratory presents a year-round schedule of exhibitions of work by students and faculty at the University of Texas at Austin and also facilitates workshops, performances, demonstrations, seminars and collaborations.

The Lab is located at 2832 East Martin Luther King Boulevard , located in East Austin at 2832 East Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, inside Flatbed World Headquarters. There is ample free parking and bus service available on Capitol Metro's route 18. The activities of the Department of Art and Art History and the Creative Research Laboratory are free and open to the public.
