Senior Studio Show

The University of Texas at Austin Art and Art History Department’s Senior Studio Show: Work by graduating seniors in Studio Art, selected by Frances Colpitt, Associate Professor of Art History and Criticism at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

February 26 - March 19, 2005

Beginning Saturday, February 26, Creative Research Laboratory presents the work of some of the best and brightest young visual artists in Austin in Senior Studio Exhibition 2005. Each year roughly 150 students graduate with a B.F.A. or B.A. from the Studio Division in the Department of Art and Art History. This year the faculty in Studio Art nominated the work of 60 graduating students. Guest curator Frances Colpitt, Associate Professor of Art History and Criticism at the University of Texas at San Antonio will select works for the exhibit from these nominations. The show represents a full range of media, from drawing, painting, sculpture, prints, photographs, to video and performance.

The studio program in the Department of Art and Art History is one of the most diverse in the country, with 390 students pursuing both the B.F.A. or B.A. degrees in studio art. The curriculum stresses both hands-on technical development and fluency in contemporary visual art discourse. The B.F.A. degree requires 20 studio courses (60 credit hours), each consisting of half-day work sessions in fully-equipped studios led by faculty artists. Time in the studio is supplemented by another 20 required academic courses in arts and sciences for a total of 120 degree hours. Students selected for this exhibition finish their degree programs in the Fall 2004, Spring 2005 or Summer 2005.

Frances Colpitt is a Professor of Art History and Criticism at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where she has served as Chair of the Department of Art and Art History since 2002. A critic and art historian specializing in American art since 1960, she received her B.F.A. and M.A. from the University of Tulsa and her Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. The author of numerous articles appearing in periodicals such as Art in America, Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism, and Art Journal, she is also a corresponding editor and regular reviewer for Art in America and a member of the contributors board of artUS. As a curator, her numerous exhibitions include Glow: Aspects of Light in Contemporary Art (UTSA Art Gallery, traveling, 2002-03), Texas Abstract: New Painting in the Nineties (ArtPace, traveling, 1995-97), Finish Fetish: L.A.'s Cool School (University of Southern California, 1991).

Creative Research Laboratory presents a year-round schedule of exhibitions of work by students and faculty at the University of Texas at Austin, and also facilitates workshops, performances, demonstrations, seminars and collaborations. Creative Research Laboratory is located in East Austin at 2832 East Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, inside Flatbed World Headquarters. There is ample free parking and bus service available on Capitol Metro's route 18. The activities of the Department of Art and Art History and the Creative Research Laboratory are free and open to the public.
