University of New Mexico and Design at the
University of Texas at Austin
January 21 - February 12, 2005

Opening Friday, January 21, Creative Research Laboratory
presents LAND ARTS OF THE AMERICAN WEST 2004,
introducing work by fourteen students from Studio Art at
the University of New Mexico and Design at the University
of Texas at Austin. The opening reception will take place 6
to 9 p.m. at Creative Research Laboratory, located at 2832
East Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard in Austin.
LAND ARTS OF THE AMERICAN WEST is a studio-based, field
study program dedicated to the investigation of land arts
from pre-contact Native American to contemporary Euro-
American cultures. Land Arts is a collaboration between
Studio Art at the University of New Mexico and Design at
the University of Texas at Austin. Fourteen students led by
two faculty spend the fall semester living and working in the
southwest. Occupying the land for weeks at a time, living
as a nomadic group and working directly in the
environment, students navigate issues of culture, site,
community and self.
The exhibition features work in a variety of media produced
in direct response to the program. The artists and
designers featured in LAND ARTS OF THE AMERICAN WEST
2004 are Julie Brown, Alexandra Codlin, Grant Davis, Nina
Dubois, Veronica Giavedoni, Mark Hensel, Carissa Leos,
Jonathan Loth, Erika Osborne, Tracey Stuckey, Beatrice
Thomas, Ben Tremper, Michael Wachs, and Mariah
Williamson. The exhibition is curated by faculty members
Bill Gilbert and Chris Taylor.
LAND ARTS OF THE AMERICAN WEST 2004 was previously
shown at John Sommers Gallery at the University of New
Mexico in Albuquerque December 8 20, 2004.
