Opening Saturday July 10, Creative Research Laboratory presents threads, introducing work by eight Master of Fine Arts candidates curated by five graduate students, all from the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Austin. The opening reception will take place 6 to 9 pm at Creative Research Laboratory.

threads is the first of two summer exhibitions organized collaboratively by students in the Department of Art and Art History. The artists featured in threads are Christy Black, Jason Buchanan, Katalin Hausel, Ceci Israel-Bradfield, Jennifer Little ,Nathan Spondike, Jade Walker, and Brant Watson. MFA candidate Eric Zimmerman and MA candidates Alex Codlin, Rakia Faber, Laura Lindenberger and Alberto McKelligan curated the show.

The artists in this show incorporate elements of telling and re-telling personal narrative, history and myth. Closely investigating their relationships to process, materials, scale, and art history, many of the artists re-think the definitions of their media, stretching the boundaries of traditional understanding. Several of the works present subtle quotations of well-known paintings and art historical references. In other pieces, the artists explore the physical presence of language as it relates to the body, the viewer’s space in encountering a work of art, and the juxtaposition of urban nature and manufactured structures.

A catalogue of essays and interviews will accompany the exhibition.

In conjunction with threads, Creative Research Laboratory will also present the Master of Fine Art thesis project by Yanyan Qian, a graduate student in the Design division of the Department of Art and Art History.

Creative Research Laboratory presents a year-round schedule of exhibitions of work by students and faculty at the University of Texas at Austin and also facilitates workshops, performances, demonstrations, seminars and collaborations.
