Untitled (Slanted, Wedge)
oil on shaped panel
2004

I choose a subtle form - slightly off the rectangle - to generate a physical sensation. This is the jumping-off point for the composition. The shaped panels visually change as the composition does, being pushed by the paint, constricting the marks or moving with them. Through formal experimentation I establish spatial relationships. I constantly edit and add during the process of painting, although the surface may not always reveal this history. The spontaneity of my mark-making gives freshness and immediacy to the work. I intend each mark, when paired with its color and value, to evoke a particular action. The gestural process infuses the forms with density or airiness and intensifies the color interactions. My work relays a sense of air, light, time and gravity. These paintings are images of actions. Once the work achieves a specific dynamic, I leave you with that moment in time.
