2004

My creative work incorporates ideas, images and spaces from biology, architecture, and physics. My work has evolved from an initial investigation of growth patterns in nature to related concepts in architecture that introduce non-inert models of organization. In turn, the exploration of these transgressive, dynamic systems caused me to investigate principles that effect complex, self-generating systems on both micro- and macrocosmic scales. The motivating force in my latest body of work is a desire to synthesize what I am drawing from these disparate fields into a unified visual strategy. Laying down lines of color, I map the cosmologies that inhabit my mind. The virtual space has folded itself into my physical world and infected my imagination. I see the post-modern condition as a pulsating, everchanging system of complex, only seemingly random relationships.

My latest body of work loops between analog and digital production, virtual and actual forms, 3-D and 2-D, a still image and time-based work. In large-scale mixed media installations I have expanded the investigation of heterogeneous systems and the hybrid spaces in which they exist. Hard lines representing one system are intertwined into soft, swiftly moving painterly hues of another systemic structure. Orbiting objects mark the space with their trajectories. The whole is a complex, breathing entity. I photograph and digitally manipulate images of these installations, employing an approach similar to a DJ remixing a soundtrack - sampling, fragmenting, and superimposing images. Printouts of these collages are made into 3-D models and recorded on video. Freeze frames from the videos and the digital pictures of the environments made from the paper models are recycled in digital collages, which inspire new large-scale installations.
