Near and Far
recent work by seven faculty artists in the department of art & art historty at the university of texas at austin

September 25 to October 16 at Creative Research Laboratory

Opening Thursday, September 25, Creative Research Laboratory presents Near and Far, an exhibition of recent work by seven faculty artists in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Austin. An opening reception will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibition continues through October 16.

Near and Far is an eclectic gathering of work which in some cases represents a departure or experimental venture by the artist. Two paintings by Susan Whyne will be shown in an installation with related sculptural pieces. Robert Dale Anderson and Dan Sutherland will collaborate on a site-specific wall drawing (their first) for the exhibition. A new video piece by Michael Smith, “Famous Quotes from Art History” takes a humorous look at the way meaning is colored by a shift in context. The exhibition features a new low relief wood sculpture – 16 feet in length – and two new woodcut prints by Christopher Adejumo, as well as a recent triptych oil painting, “Blind Visions,” by Susan Mayer.

A highlight of the exhibition is text and photographic documentation of a major public art project by John Yancey completed this past summer. The 11th Street Art Wall, a new East Side landmark, celebrates the culture of this historically African-American neighborhood.

Creative Research Laboratory presents a year-round schedule of exhibitions of work by students and faculty at the University of Texas at Austin, and also facilitates workshops, performances, demonstrations, seminars and collaborations.
