HSA-Austin Annual Teacher Training Workshop

Below is the schedule for the teacher workshop organized by the Engineering Education Research Center.  The workshop was held in the Thompson Conference Center at the University of Texas at Austin in August 2008.  The workshop began with a welcome speech by Dr. Yetkin Yildirim, P.E., Director of EERC. During the morning session, Leah Waheed, behavior specialist from Region 13, joined us for a talk on classroom management. This session was open to all teachers from all levels.

Dr. Debra Junk, the program coordinator for the Science Education Center at the College of Education at the University of Texas at Austin, spoke from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm.  She discussed elementary-level mathematics.  Joining Dr. Junk in the elementary education sessions was Brian Fortney, a graduate student studying science education at the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and an assistant instructor in the College of Education at UT-Austin.  His talk focused on elementary science education.  For the social studies session, Dr. Frances Monteverde, a lecturer at Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education at UT-Austin, led an afternoon-long talk about educating for democracy and critical thinking. Dr. Jill Marshall, an assistant professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education at UT-Austin, spoke at the session on science and math education.  Dr. Marshall joined us for a talk about science education from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm. Finally, Dr. Lupita Carmona, also an assistant professor for the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education at UT-Austin, and Adem Ekmekci, a graduate student studying math education at the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and an assistant instructor in the College of Education at UT-Austin, spoke from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm on the topics of math and engineering education.
