Project Abstract:

In the year of 2008, there was an estimated amount of 5.81 million car accidents in the US alone. Most of the accidents were due to reckless drivers, but I think if there was a way for the drivers to know how much time they had to pass the traffic light or how much time they had to wait for green it would decrease the number of accidents drastically. The purpose of this project is to attach a countdown timer to traffic lights that will inform drivers how much time they have until the light changes.

B y using a binary down counter circuit along with a traffic light circuit, it is possible to reproduce a traffic light system with countdown timers. The design of this project involves a countdown being represented in binary format, so the drivers who cannot understand binary numbers will have a hard time figuring out how many seconds are left.

During my research, I found out that in Taiwan countdown traffic lights are already being used, but  results say that the countdown from green light to red actually increased accidents, while the countdown from red light to green halved the number of accidents. In the future, I can produce a countdown that uses a digital seven-segment display so that drivers can better visualize how much time they have left. Based on the Taiwanese results I can design a better countdown from green light to red for instance I can add extra seconds that won’t show on the countdown.
