Project Abstract:

The purpose of my project was if temperature affected the growth rate/ development of a Drosophila embryo.

My procedure was the following:

After fabricating my microfludic device, I introduced Drosophila embryos into the microchannel. Once the embryos were assembled on the gold pads, I started the perturbation by connecting the peristaltic pump to the inlets of the channel. One inlet delivered water at a temperature of 20°C to the embryos, and the other inlet delivered a 35°C flow. Water was pumped for 1 hour to the embryos and the development of the embryo was examined throughout the duration of the experiment using the DIC microscope.

My results were the following:

Using my microfluidic device, each side of the embryo will be exposed to a hot or cold temperature. To examine the development of the Drosophila embryo, I looked at the progression of the furrow front as the embryo developed. After examining the DIC microscope images, I noticed that the furrow front progressed inward faster in the warmer side than in the colder side, proving my hypothesis right.
