01-09-05: Sahotra Sarkar spent August at the University of Queensland. Chris Margules and he finished a draft of their book, Systematic Conservation Planning.
12-07-05: Keith Wheeler from IUCN's World Conservation Learning Center visited our lab. yesterday; the event was organized by our Environmental Science Institute. We will help IUCN prepare educational material for use worldwide, and also orient the ConsNet Portal for their use.
10-07-05: Trevon Fuller will present a talk, "Stochastic Programming Methods for the Design of Conservation Area Net Works," at the European Conference on Mathematical and Theoretical Biology at Dresden, Germany, on 21 July 2005.
James Justus will present a talk, "How Should Ecological Stability Be Defined?," at the International Society for the History, Philosophy and Social Studies of Biology (ISHPSSB) Biennial Meeting at Guelph, Canada, on 14 July 2005.
11-05-05: Chris Margules (CSIRO) is visiting our laboratory for three weeks to work on a book, Systematic Conservation Planning, with Sahotra Sarkar.
22-03-05: A. Townsend Peterson (University of Kansas) will be visiting us at Texas from 22-24 March 2005. He will be giving a talk, "Fine Scale Prediction of the Geography of Diseases," at 2:00 p.m. at MBB 1.210.
Sahotra Sarkar visited the University of Queensland, 13 March 2005-20 March 2005. He gave a talk, "Planning for Biodiversity," at the Spatial Ecology Laboratory (of Hugh Possingham).
Justin Garson won the Cogburn Philosophical Essay Contest Prize awarded by the Department of Philosophy, University of Texas at Austin, Spring 2005.
Trevon Fuller got his paper, "Place Prioritization for Biodiversity Conservation with Uncertain Costs and Surrogate Distributions," accepted for the next Society for Conservation Biology Meeting at Brasilia, Brazil,15-19 July 2005.
14-02-05: Michelle Koo of the California Academy of Sciences is visiting BBCL from 14-02-05 to 17-02-05 to collaborate on our Eastern Himalayas project.
10-02-05: Sahotra Sarkar will be delivering three lectures at the University of Chicago on 22 February ("Planning for Biodiversity"); 23 February ("The Poverty of Design: Evolution and its Discontents"); and 24 February ("The Politics of Anti-Naturalism"). All lectures are from 4:00-5:30 p.m. at the Franke Institute for the Humanities, 1100 E. 57th Street (JRL S-118).
