Colossus
Wed, 26 July 2000
When I was looking up the specs on the Maxi Alpha 3 in an
old Estes catalog to see if I wanted
to purchase one of the re-issues, I noticed another rocket on the same page that was just like an Maxi Alpha, only longer.
It was called Colossus. The only difference appeared to be an extra standard length of BT80. So I figured for the price of
buying a new Maxi Alpha I could just build a Colossus. But of course, there would have to be some upgrades. It should have
a 29mm MMT, basswood TTW fins, ejection baffle, and a payload bay to hold an altimeter. I also decided to build the fin can
using the technique where the fins are attched to the MMT and then slid into the BT. I've got all the parts and construction
is progressing. Stand by.

The fin can is about done. It's got more epoxy in it than it needs though. Those internal fillets are a pain. I'll epoxy on the coupler/baffle section tonight as well as the aft CR.

External fillets done. Ready for prime & paint.

Well, this one has been sitting on the bench quite awhile. I finally got around to putting it's
white base coat on today. I'll be painting the fin can yellow and applying some decals from
Tango Papa soon.
