APRS

My APRS station consists of a Kantronics KPC-3+ TNC and an Icom IC-2100H VHF radio. The antenna is a Tram 1480 VHF/UHF. I monitor the position reports on a Macintosh G4 using Xastir. My weather station is an Oregon Scientific WM-918 and beacons every 15 minutes.

For the time being, Xastir's IGate function is disabled; the DIGI setting of the TNC is set to ON but MYALIAS is blank.

The tracker in my vehicle (KE5AQD-3) consists of an Alinco DR-1200 VHF radio, a TinyTrak3+ and a Garmin GPS-18LVC. When away from my vehicle I use a Kenwood TH-D7A HT and an Garmin Etrex GPS. When out trail riding on my bike, I hook my D7 to this antenna that I built.

Packet Station Info

My packet radio station consists of a Kantronics KPC-3+ TNC and an Icom IC-2100H VHF radio. The antenna is a Tram 1480 VHF/UHF. I monitor the packet traffic on a Macintosh G4 using the Zterm terminal program. I plan on keeping this station up and running 24/7 for the foreseeable future.

AO-51 Tutorial

07 Aug 2005
I've been more actively pursuing satellite contacts via AO-51 recently. My favorite satellite tracking program is SatTrack using TLE sets from Celestrak. I typically printout predictions for an entire week and then plan accordingly. I use a Kenwood TH-D7 HT connected to an Arrow antenna mounted on a tripod. I have a headset for the HT which helps a lot. I point the antenna and tune the HT by hand. Sometimes my eight year old son helps with the antenna pointing duties, so if I don't come back to you, please understand and I'll catch you next time. I QSL contacts made via satellite, even if your QTH is next door. I appreciate your QSL as well. Thanks!
I recently aquired an digital voice recorder and stopped using the tripod. The ability to twist the antenna to match the satellite turns out to be an important aspect of making many contacts per pass.
28 Dec 2007 In anticipation of upgrading my sat station to a mechanically steered setup, I paid for a copy of MacDoppler for Cocoa. I really like the graphic displays and am looking forward to making use of its rig and rotator control features.

My current HF capabilities are limited to 10m SSB and 40m CW. My 10m rig is an MFJ-9410. My 40m rig is an MFJ-9040. Although the 9040 has the optional iambic keyer module built-in, I typically use it in conjunction with an MFJ-407B electronic keyer. I use a Van Gorden parallel dipole antenna.

I recently aquired a Yaesu FT-840 (eBay is a wonderful thing) so now I am up SSB, AM, & CW on 10m, 17m, 20m, 30m, and 40m. I bought the CW filter for my new unit, along with the serial interface. The filter works great, but I have yet to get the interface to work via a USB adapter. My MFJ Antenna tuner is able to tune my parallel dipole on 17m and 30m pretty good, but 12, 15 and 80m don't tune so well. I guess I'll have to see where I can stick more antennas on my roof for those bands.

15 Dec 2006 I've upgraded to an Icom 756 Pro 2. I've been having a great deal of fun figuring out all the whistles and bells. This xceiver has 6M capabilities so now I'll be looking to install a decent 6M antenna. The internal keyer of this rig has giving me a bit of frustration. It seems that Icom did not see fit to give users the ability to choose between Mode A and Mode B. The rig only does Mode B. It's taken me a few days to get used to it but I seem to be sending readable code now.

20 Dec 2006 I just joined the SKCC (#2470C). I've never actually used a straight key but I'm looking to get one now. I figure that since the FCC doesn't seem to care about the preservation of the art and skill of Morse Code then I need to do it my myself. I will probably still use my paddles and keyer most of the time but if you want to exchange SKCC numbers I will switch to the SK (when I actually get one HIHI). I've been using the SKCC Gold key #46.

I am now active on PSK31 and RTTY. I use DarwinPSK on my Mac and my radio interface is a RigBlaster Plus. Look for me on your waterfall.

01 Jan 2007 I've changed over to cocoaModem for all my digital activities. (070 Club# 459 30MDG# 68 Feld Hell Club# FH2837) It is a truely FB piece of software! One of it's magical capabilites is the implementation of the waterfall click-buffer. cocoaModem's contest interface is also a fantastic ability. Also, it has Hellschrieber mode so I'm looking forward to my first QSOs in that mode.
I've written and/or modified some Applescripts to use with cocoaModem and MacLoggerDX. Downloads Checkout my recent activity on PSKReporter.

I like to QSL. If I copied your callsign and heard you repeat mine, you'll be getting a QSL card unless we have already worked this band/mode. If you don't get one and my logbook says I sent it, blame USPS and let me know, I'll send another. I tend to send them out in batches though. I hold those going out via buro until I have 7 or 8, directs until I have around thirty. I'm set up in the FISTS, ARRL, and 3905ccn buros, but always feel free to QSL direct; no SASE needed. If you are a FISTS Club member or we made contact on a 3905 Century Club net, I'll be sending yours via the buro unless otherwise specified. I usually try to gleen your QSL details from QRZ.com and follow any instructions found there. I've been leaning toward machine printing my QSLs so if you require a hand-written one for award purposes, just let me know.

My day-to-day logger is MacLoggerDX. I like it for its extensive memory and rig control capabilities. But, for long term storage and record-keeping I use jLog. It can load up 10,000 records lightning fast and implements just about every ADIF tag in the spec. Additioanlly, it can export in XML format which makes maintaining a web version of my log a snap.

eQSL -- I have an eQSL (AG) account and will acknowledge eQSLs but I still like getting and sending real cards. My Profile Awards: eDX ePFX300
LoTW -- I upload my log to LoTW every month or so.
