Notes

- Stephen A. was born in what then was Washington County, Kentucky, but later the area became a part of Marion County, Kentucky. - One source suggests that Stephen and Sarah Ann were first married in a civil ceremony ca.1835 when a Catholic priest was not available, then were married later in the Catholic Church 1-14-1842 when a priest was available. - Two other sources (Mattingly Genealogy and d-gjones@bmtc.mindspring.com), report that Stephen was first married to a Nancy Hardesty, a cousin of Sarah Ann; this might better explain the marriage to Sarah Ann taking place in 1842 after Sarah Ann, Stephen Jr. and Arnold children had been born previously with Nancy actually being the mother of those 3 children. - The note about Stephen A. being first married to Nancy Hardesty with her being the mother of children Stephen A. Jr., Sarah Ann and Arnold, has been futher reported by Missb10000@aol.com who is quoting from a book, "Mattingly Genealogy" (author unknown). - According to the 1840 US Census Stephen was living in Kentucky with his wife and 6 children; no sources have so far reported how there could have been more children than the 3 so far reported as being born in the Stephen and Nancy Hardesty union. - It is assumed Nancy Hardesty deceased sometime between 1840 and the marriage of Stephen A. to Sarah Ann Hardesty in 1842 since that marriage ceremony was performed by a Catholic priest. - One source suggests that there was actually two sons born 1842/8 with the names George and Henry respectively.. - Melissa T. Alexander reports that the wedding of Ann McGlothin and Tom took place on "8-28-1849. - No children other than Thomas A. have been reported born in the marriage with Mary McGlothin. - No children are reported as being born in the marriage to Elizabeth Hardesty. - The will of father provided, "To my son Stephen I have given at various times items to the value of $1785.75 (dollars) which I will to him as his full share of my estate". - According to 1880 US Census Stephen was born in KY with both parents born in MD.
