Notes

- Ron Goodwin reports Thomas was born "ca.1775" and agrees that he deceased 9-16-1863, Butler County, AL. - Reportedly Thomas's family family ran a general store just south of Fairforest Creek, Union County, South Carolina in late 1700's and early 1800's. - The 1850 census entry for a Thomas Hays seems to be our family member since the year of birth is consistent and it is known that our family member lived in Butler County, Alabama in the years both before and after 1840. However, the notation that the Thomas listed on the census was born in Maine is inconsistent with the previous deduction that our Thomas was born in Union County, South Carolina. Possible explanations for the notation on the 1850 census that Thomas was born in Maine include (a) this is true and that the previous deduction that our Thomas was born in Union County, South Carolina is in error; (b) the Thomas listed on the census is not our family member; and (c) the 1850 census listing was in error.
