The Anime Club at UT Austin will be presenting its first showing of the Spring 1998 semester on Friday, January 23rd, at 7 pm in Welch 1.316. The showing is free and open to the public.
Please keep in mind that showing schedules are tentative, and are always subject to some changes. Programs are not necessarily listed here in the order they will be shown.
Unless otherwise noted, all scheduled programs are subtitled in English.
Note! As last week was the last week of checkouts, it is assumed that library will run much shorter this week. Therefore, we will be showing four and a half hours of material, in order to finish Fushigi Yuugi.
Last fall, we showed the ending of the FY TV series. Now, we pick up, as these OAVs do, after the events of the series. Some of our favorites are back, and (it seems), some of our not-so-favorites. We saw three of the four Mikos during the course of the show; now we find out a bit more about Genbu no Miko, the Miko from many years ago who did not survive.... This OAV series also features very funny 'Omakes' (specials) at the end of each episode, which in themselves make up a little three-part story.
The adventures of a wandering samurai and former assassin, now defender of the downtrodden, and his friends who of course get into lots of trouble with local bullies and gangsters so he can rescue them. And the occasional warrior who wants to challenge him. And yes, that's three episodes. Apparently this is another story arc.
This is the story of a high-school student, Hitomi Kanzaki, who is mysteriously transported to another world, where Earth and the Moon are visible in the sky. As the Girl from the Phantom Moon (Earth), she is heralded as someone with great power in this new world, power which she uses both wisely and not so wisely, during the course of the series. A wonderful show, IMHO, with lots of action and character development.
Note: These are NOT the reeeeeeaally bad Hecto subs of the straight-from-TV episodes. These are from laserdisc, by another group; Emily says that the LD versions of the episodes have a few more minutes' worth of material. So don't skip this just because you think you've seen it before!
This is the story of a teenage sleuth who somehow becomes trapped in the body of an elementary-school boy. He solves mysteries with his adolescent girlfriend, who doesn't know that this young boy is actually her boyfriend. While the mysteries themselves are fairly serious, the series had a good dose of humor as well.
This is mostly lighthearted space adventure, along the lines of 'Irresponsible Captain Tylor'. Mars had been a successful Earth colony, but has been laid to waste by an alien race known as the Jovians. The Jovians are now headed for Earth, with the Battleship Nadesico, the most powerful in the human fleet, hot on their heels. The captain is a very young, supposedly brilliant young woman, who comes across as your basic anime teenager, including an unrequited (maybe?) crush on a young man with a mysterious past on Mars. He wants nothing more than to be a cook, but winds up piloting one of the ship's mechs. Last episode took a rather serious turn, so we'll have to see how the tone changes.
This is a usually-funny story, set in the 1920s, about a young woman and the vampire who is bound to serve her family, and the two young people (spirits?) who are bound to serve the vampire. The heroine is on a quest for 'O-Parts', ancient magical items which, when assembled, can give the possessor immortality (so she can stay young and lovely for her "Mo-chan"). The O-Parts apparently involve the appearance of huge pyramids in the middle of random places. Of course, other people are seeking the O-parts, including a rather villanous opponent with a vampirical servant of his own.
All members of the university and local community are welcome to attend this presentation of the latest and greatest in Japanese animation. The showing will run until roughly midnight, so please come when you can. We look forward to having you there!
