The Anime Club at UT Austin will be presenting its final showing of the Fall 1997 semester on Friday, December 5th, at 7 pm in Welch 1.316. The showing is free and open to the public.
Please keep in mind that showing schedules are tentative, and are always subject to some changes. Programs are not necessarily listed here in the order they will be shown.
Unless otherwise noted, all scheduled programs are subtitled in English.
Note! As last week was the last week of checkouts, it is assumed that library will run much shorter this week. Therefore, we will be showing four and a half hours of material, in order to finish Fushigi Yuugi.
Urameshi Yusuke is a high-school delinquent with a rough home life; his father is gone, and his mother is essentially a drunkard. He cuts class frequently, is disrespectful to his teachers, and is generally feared by most of his peers. However, deep down, he's not really that bad a guy, as he proves when he rescues a young boy from being hit by a car. Unfortunately, he died in the accident; but because he passed the trials given to him, he was returned to life and now acts as a detective for the spirit world. These episodes continue, and finish, the story arc about the tournament.
The adventures of a wandering samurai and former assassin, now defender of the downtrodden, and his friends who of course get into lots of trouble with local bullies and gangsters so he can rescue them. And the occasional warrior who wants to challenge him.
This is the story of a high-school student, Hitomi Kanzaki, who is mysteriously transported to another world, where Earth and the Moon are visible in the sky. As the Girl from the Phantom Moon (Earth), she is heralded as someone with great power in this new world, power which she uses both wisely and not so wisely, during the course of the series. A wonderful show, IMHO, with lots of action and character development.
Note: These are NOT the reeeeeeaally bad Hecto subs of the straight-from-TV episodes. These are from laserdisc, by another group; Emily says that the LD versions of the episodes have a few more minutes' worth of material. So don't skip this just because you think you've seen it before!
This is the story of a teenage sleuth who somehow becomes trapped in the body of an elementary-school boy. He solves mysteries with his adolescent girlfriend, who doesn't know that this young boy is actually her boyfriend. While the mysteries themselves are fairly serious, the series had a good dose of humor as well.
This is a fairly lighthearted space adventure, along the lines of 'Irresponsible Captain Tylor'. Mars had been a successful Earth colony, but has been laid to waste by an alien race known as the Jovians. The Jovians are now headed for Earth, with the Battleship Nadesico, the most powerful in the human fleet, hot on their heels. The captain is a very young, supposedly brilliant young woman, who comes across as your basic anime teenager, including an unrequited (maybe?) crush on a young man with a mysterious past on Mars. He wants nothing more than to be a cook, but winds up piloting one of the ship's mechs.
City Hunter has been a manga, a TV series, and several movies and OAVs. The title actually refers to the team of Ryo Saeba (hentai extraordinare and possibly the best shot in the world), and Kaori Makimura (the younger sister of Ryo's former partner, and the only person who seems able to keep even a semblance of a rein on Ryo's...interests). They are 'sweepers', guns-for-hire. This, of course, gets them into all sorts of situtions. I'm not sure what this particular show is about, but I can guarantee it'll be full of really cool gunfights, things going boom, and physical comedy.
All members of the university and local community are welcome to attend this presentation of the latest and greatest in Japanese animation. The showing will run until roughly midnight, so please come when you can. We look forward to having you there!
