Anime Club Showing: October 31, 1997

Special Halloween Showing!

The Anime Club at UT Austin will be presenting its tenth showing of the Fall 1997 semester on Friday, October 31st, at 7 pm in Welch 1.316. The showing is free and open to the public. This is our annual Halloween showing, so the ongoing shows we've been watching this semester won't be shown; they'll return next week. Instead, we will show a collection of both scary shows, and silly ones with some vague connection to the season. Be sure to make this part of your Halloween festivities!

Please keep in mind that showing schedules are tentative, and are always subject to some changes. Programs are not necessarily listed here in the order they will be shown.

Unless otherwise noted, all scheduled programs are subtitled in English.

On the program are:

(Some listings are linked to the show's entry in the Anime Web Guide, or some other relevant web page; short-short summaries written by Rebecca Sims.)

Mahou Tsukai Tai (aka Magic User's Club) #1-2

Earth has been invaded by extremely powerful aliens who, after destroying the earth's defenses, have sat back and left the people of Earth alone, with the only signs of their continued presence being their ships hovering above. Meanwhile, a few students at Kitanohashi High School have formed the Magic User's Club, and decided that their goal is to free Earth from the invaders! An extremely funny and cute show. Yes, we've shown #1 before, but since we're showing #2, it's only fair to have the background.

Detective Conan TV #1

This is the story of a teenage sleuth who somehow becomes trapped in the body of an elementary-school boy. He solves mysteries with his adolescent girlfriend, who doesn't know that this young boy is actually her boyfriend. While the mysteries themselves are fairly serious, I seem to recall that this series had a good dose of humor as well.

Neon Genesis Evangelion TV #1 (DUBBED)

Well into the twenty-first century, Earth is still recovering from fifteen years ago, when it was attacked by alien craft known only as 'Angels'. In defense, Earth has built collapsable cities such as Tokyo-3, which goes underground at night. Now, the Angels have returned, and a scientist takes it upon himself and his agency to defeat them at all costs, even if it means the life of his son, Shinji, who is the focus of the series. And yes, this is the dub. It's Halloween, right? You're supposed to be scared. ;P

Jigoku Sensei Nube Movie (UNTRANSLATED)

The title is translated as 'Hell Teacher Nube'; the teacher in question is Nube, a powerful spiritualist and public-school teacher who frequently battles spirits and demons trying to take his students. He looks normal, except for the fact that he wears one black glove, which covers a demon hand/claw (that, presumeably, somehow boosts his powers or otherwise helps him fight). One of the running gags is Nube's crush on Ritsuko-sensei, a fellow teacher who is terribly afraid of ghosts and the like, and who therefore avoids Nube's classroom when she can.

Special Premiere Showing of Mystery Film

This is one of those weird-but-cool things Emily manages to get her hands on. Because of the arrangement she made, we can't say the title of this movie, or too much about the plot, in advance. I can tell you, however, that it looks to be a well-animated psychological thriller. Furthermore, this will be it's American debut; it has not been released here, and may not even have been released in Japan yet. But it IS subtitled.
Note: This is a violent film, with some adult scenes/situations, so it's not recommended for the younger set or easily squicked viewers. Because of this, I'm guessing it will be shown last.

All members of the university and local community are welcome to attend this presentation of the latest and greatest in Japanese animation. The showing will run until roughly midnight, so please come when you can. We look forward to having you there!
