Most listings are linked to the show's entry in the Anime Web Guide, or some other relevant web page; short-short summaries written by Rebecca Sims unless otherwise noted. - *Lamune & 40 Fire #5
This series is a sequel of sorts to NG Knight Lamune & 40, and is by the same people who produced the Saber Marionettes shows. Much like Saber Marionettes, this sequel appears to be essentially a retelling of the earlier story. A schoolboy, Baba Lamunade, goes to the arcade one afternoon. On his way home, he encounters two mysterious girls who give him a CD-ROM and ask him to play it. Mystified, he does so, only to have the two girls appear in his room and identify themselves as Parfait and Cacao (yes, lots of drink names in this show), and tell Lamunade he must come with them to Doki-Doki space to defend it from the evil sorcerer Don Genosai, who is working to free the evil god Abrahm, imprisioned some 5000 years before by the hero Lamuness.
- *Saber Marionettes J #8
This story is set in a world with no women; instead, androids (gynoids?) have been made in their place. Some of these 'roids have a special otome kairo, or "girl circuit", which enables them to have human-like emotions. The J series seems to be a sequel of sorts to Saber Marionettes R, featuring Lime, Cherry and Blackberry/Bloodberry, Our Heroines from R. However, this seems to be a different world or time period, as there is no sign of Junior. But of course there is an evil villain to be defeated, who has his own evilnastybad gynoids.
- *Gundam Wing #8
The colonies of Earth, in their continuing struggle for independence, have launched a plan to cripple the Earth's military forces. Five Gundam (mechs/powersuits) models unlike any seen previously have landed at different locations around the globe, and their young pilots have begun their various offensives against OZ, the global military organization which has become more and more powerful since the colonies were first subdued.
- *Kodomo no Omocha (Child's Toy) TV #5
Story of an 11-year-old-girl who is a child TV star, going to a regular junior high school. Being cute and famous, she is of course the 'leader' of the girls, and as such is part of an ongoing battle with the boys in her class. Her chief "opponent", at first is Hayama Akito, the leader of the boys, but as she finds out more about him, Sana begins to feel some sympathy...
- *Those Who Hunt For Elves #4
From the same person who created Saber Marionettes, Lamune & 40, Bakuen Campus Guardress, and MAZE, which guarantees that it will have nudity and/or sexual innuendo in it. A group of adventurers are trying to find a secret spell, the pieces of which are printed on the bodies of elves. This, of course, means they have to roam around stripping elves. (written with material from the ever-knowledgeable Kevin Lew ^_^)
- *Rurouni Kenshin #9
The adventures of a wandering samurai and former assassin, now defender of the downtrodden, and his friends who of course get into lots of trouble with local bullies and gangsters so he can rescue them. And the occasional warrior who wants to challenge him.
- Memories
A film by Otomo Katsuhiro, the creator of Akira. Rather, it is a collection of three short films, all with a certain science-fiction orientation, although they vary greatly in terms of plot, animation styles, and even music. In "Magnetic Rose", four interstellar garbage collectors find a rather unique surprise buried in the space scrapyard, while "Stink Bomb" follows the exploits of a somewhat hapless scientist, whose accidental ingestion of a pill makes him a walking biological weapon. The last segment, "Cannon Fodder", seems to be a slower, more thoughtful story, almost a meditation on how war affects a society. I've heard a lot of people rave about this film, so I think it'll be worth staying around for.
So if you're interested in seeing some great animation with some truly
diverse stories, check out the Anime Club free showing, open to all on
Friday, June 27th, from 7pm to midnight, in Engineering Teaching Center
room ETC 2.108. For those not familiar with UT, the ETC
