A free showing of Japanese animation!
The UT Austin Anime Club will be presenting its second screening for the summer semester on Friday, June 13th. The showing is free to all with an interest in great animation and stories.
Please keep in mind that showing schedules are always tentative, and that programs are not necessarily listed here in the order they'll be shown.
On the program are:
Most listings are linked to the show's entry in the Anime Web Guide, or some other relevant web page; short-short summaries written by Rebecca Sims. Shows with a '*' by the title are being shown regularly this semester, or are at least continuing for a few more viewings. All shows for this viewing are subtitled in English.
- *Lamune Fire #3
This series is a sequel of sorts to NG Knight Lamune & 40, and seems to be by the same people who produced the Saber Marionettes shows. Much like Saber Marionettes, this sequel appears to be essentially a retelling of the earlier story. A schoolboy, Baba Lamunade, goes to the arcade one afternoon. On his way home, he encounters two mysterious girls who give him a CD-ROM and ask him to play it. Mystified, he does so, only to have the two girls appear in his room and identify themselves as Parfait and Cacao (yes, lots of drink names in this show), and tell Lamunade he must come with them to Doki-Doki space to defend it from the evil sorcerer Don Genosai, who is working to free the evil god Abrahm, imprisioned some 5000 years before by the hero Lamuness.
- Bakuretsu Hunter #6
The bakuretsu or "sorcerer" hunters are a team of famous, well, sorcerer hunters who get their assignments through a figure named Big Mama. All of the hunters have food names--for example, Carrot, the male lead, who rivals Ataru Moroboshi or Ryo Saeba for lecherousness (but of course, he all but ignores the two female hunters who have crushes on him). The ecchi silliness just escalates from there.
- *Saber Marionettes J #6
This story is set in a world with no women; instead, androids (gynoids?) have been made in their place. Some of these 'roids have a special otome kairo, or "girl circuit", which enables them to have human-like emotions. The J series seems to be a sequel of sorts to Saber Marionettes R, featuring Lime, Cherry and Blackberry/Bloodberry, Our Heroines from R. However, this seems to be a different world or time period, as there is no sign of Junior. But of course there is an evil villain to be defeated, who has his own evilnastybad gynoids.
- *Gundam Wing #6
The colonies of Earth, in their continuing struggle for independence, have launched a plan to cripple the Earth's military forces. Five Gundam (mechs/powersuits) models unlike any seen previously have landed at different locations around the globe, and their young pilots have begun their various offensives against OZ, the global military organization which has become more and more powerful since the colonies were first subdued.
- *Those Who Hunt For Elves #1-2
I was not able to find any web pages or other sources of information on this. I believe it's recent. My guess is it's a fantasy of some sort, possibly humorous. This is just a guess, mind, you'll have to show up to find out if I missed the mark. ^_^;;
- Lupin III: Dark Order of Assasination
Hwei! Another Lupin movie! A contract has been put out on Lupin (not too suprising, all things considered). I don't know any more of the plot than that, but you can be sure it'll be full of the intrigue, physical humor, and physics-defying action that is the trademark of the Lupin III stories. ^_^
So if you're interested in seeing some great animation with some truly diverse stories, check out the Anime Club free showing, open to all on Friday, June 13th, from 7pm to midnight, in Engineering Teaching Center room ETC 2.108. For those not familiar with UT, the ETC building is located near 26th and Speedway; the main entrance is right on the north side of the 26th street bridge.
