A free showing of Japanese animation!
The UT Austin Anime Club will be presenting its eleventh screening for the spring semester on Friday, April 11th. The showing is free to all with an interest in great animation and stories.
Please keep in mind that showing schedules are always tentative, and that programs are not necessarily listed here in the order they'll be shown.
On the program are:
Most listings are linked to the show's entry in the Anime Web Guide, or some other relevant web page; short-short summaries written by Rebecca Sims. Shows with a '*' by the title are being shown regularly this semester, or are at least continuing for a few more viewings. All shows for this viewing are subtitled in English.
- Kodomo no Omocha (Child's Toy) TV #2
Story of an 11-year-old-girl who is a child TV star, going to a regular junior high school. Being cute and famous, she is of course the 'leader' of the girls, and as such is part of an ongoing battle with the boys in her class. Her chief opponent is Hayama Akito, the leader of the boys.
- Sailor Moon R #73
It's Sailor Moon. What more needs to be said? If you have no idea whatsoever what this show is about, you can follow the link. I would mention, however, that R is the Season of the Pink Menace, aka Chibi Usa. Run away! Run away!
- *Saber Marionettes J #1
This story is set in a world with no women; instead, androids (gynoids?) have been made in their place. Some of these 'roids have a special otome kairo, or "girl circuit", which enables them to have human-like emotions. The J series seems to be a sequel of sorts to Saber Marionettes R, featuring Lime, Cherry and Blackberry/Bloodberry, Our Heroines from R. However, this seems to be a different world or time period, as there is no sign of Junior. But of course there is an evil villain to be defeated, who has his own evilnastybad gynoids.
- *Ruroni Kenshin #7
A "martial arts drama/comedy" set in the early Meiji Era (1800's), about a former legendary samurai who has settled down with the residents and hangers-on of a fighting dojo run by a young woman. Naturally, as a great warrior trying to go straight, there are many incidents involving people wanting rematches, or to earn reputations, as well as people who have a grudge against the woman running the dojo, or against her late father.
- *Fushigi Yuugi #23
'Magical Girls' show about a schoolgirl, Miaka, who is transported via an ancient Chinese book to another world, where she is declared Suzaku no Miko, the priestess of the guardian deity of the kingdom she finds herself in. Romantic storyline, but also full of lots of fights with Miaka's protectors. Just remember, Suzaku is a peacock, not a phoenix.
- *Nadia #22
This show, set in the early 19th century and loosely based on Jules Verne's 20, 000 Leagues Under the Sea, follows the adventures of a young circus performer named Nadia, her pet lion King, and their friend Jean. Nadia, being fairly mysterious herself, of course has a mysterious jewel (named 'Blue Water'), which several other people are looking for; this, along with sea monsters, battleships, and ominous cults bent on world domination, accounts for many of their exploits.
Opening in Schedule! As of this writing, there is a half-hour slot as yet unscheduled. Possible solutions include bringing a small selection and letting the audience decide (on days like this, it's best to try and get to the viewing on time if you want a vote). Possible options include: Super Atragon #2, which is an hour (dependent on how library break goes); Maze #2, which Emily seems to have some reservations about; and Bakaretsu Hunters #1.
So if you're interested in seeing some great animation with some truly diverse stories, check out the Anime Club free showing, open to all on Friday, April 11th, from 7pm to midnight, in Engineering Teaching Center room ETC 2.108. For those not familiar with UT, the ETC building is located near 26th and Speedway; the main entrance is right on the north side of the 26th street bridge.
